Bauhaus4Med Project Meeting in Sarajevo: Advancing Sustainable Innovation in the Mediterranean
On April 23, 2025, Sarajevo welcomed partners and stakeholders of the Bauhaus4Med project for a pivotal in-person meeting, hosted at the heart of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s vibrant capital. Against the backdrop of Sarajevo’s rich cultural heritage and dynamic spirit, participants gathered to reflect on the project’s progress, align on future strategies, and strengthen collaborative ties.

The Bauhaus4Med project, inspired by the values of the New European Bauhaus, is dedicated to fostering sustainable, inclusive, and aesthetic solutions for the Mediterranean region, with a focus on bridging environmental innovation and local community needs. The Sarajevo meeting marked an important milestone as the consortium moved into the next implementation phase, building on early achievements and setting clear pathways for greater impact.
The day-long program featured insightful presentations from work package leaders, showcasing progress on research initiatives, pilot project designs, stakeholder engagement strategies, and communication efforts. Special attention was given to ensuring the integration of interdisciplinary approaches, citizen participation, and creative methodologies in all project activities.
Interactive workshops allowed participants to deep-dive into key challenges such as co-design practices, knowledge transfer mechanisms, and policy recommendations. These sessions encouraged active dialogue, promoting a culture of shared learning and collective problem-solving among the diverse group of academics, practitioners, local authorities, and civil society representatives.
Beyond formal sessions, the meeting fostered meaningful networking opportunities, helping to weave new connections across Mediterranean countries. Participants also had the chance to experience Sarajevo’s unique blend of cultures through a guided city tour, embodying the project’s ethos of celebrating local identity as a driver of sustainable transformation.
Also, towards the end of the day, the 1st Local Bauhaus Festival of the project was kicked off, giving us a short teaser for the next day. The Local Bauhaus Festival was co-organized by the City of Sarajevo and IFLA Europe.
The Bauhaus4Med team looks forward to the upcoming milestones, energized by the spirit of cooperation and creativity that defined the Sarajevo meeting. The journey towards a greener, more resilient Mediterranean continues — and with it, the Bauhaus4Med community grows stronger.
